MARIO'S MUSIC AND THE MUSIC PROJECT

Mario was recognised as one of South Africa’s hottest hip-hop talents, and was poised to make an international impact with his music and his activism, shortly before his passing. Special dedication and acknowledgement was made at the SAMA South African Music Awards of 2004, the year that he died.

Mario recorded over 50 tracks with various producers around the world over a period of 12 years. He never completed his album before he died and therefore remains unpublished.

Natalie van Rooy, Mr. Devious’ wife, is on a quest to gather all the musical works written and performed by her late husband. She is determined to release his album independently so that the communities here and abroad can appreciate his unflinching passion – and so his message can be heard.

She has met with most of the producers, the majority of whom have given over all of Mr Devious music files and their rights to her with no obligations, understanding and respecting her need to complete this goal of publishing an album.

Any producer or past colleague still hanging on to Mario’s work, please contact Natalie at natalievanrooy@webmail.co.za
to make arrangements.

Natalie is also at present fundraising to pay for the studio time used by Devious and Shaheen with Ghetto Ruff and Mighty Music in 1998. There are 10 unreleased tracks that Natalie wants to include in the commemorative CD release. Mighty Music is holding on to the music files until the studio bill of R28000 is paid. Anyone wishing to assist Natalie can contact her directly on the e-mail listed above.

Mario was well know for his lyrical poetry and musical performances. Ken jy vir my (Do you know me) is one of Cape Town’s favourite poems and Don’t Front was written by him from the point of view of a person with HIV as part of an HIV/AIDS awareness campaign.
